Ever find yourself wondering, “Is this my issue, or theirs?”

Relationships, much like neighbor fences on the ranch, require clear boundaries and regular upkeep. Knowing whose side of the “fence” an issue is on can prevent a lot of unnecessary conflict and confusion.

Last night, Tom and I went to bed angry. Not ragey

Last night, Tom and I went to bed angry. Not ragey, just angry.

He was angry with me and I was angry with him. This morning I woke up and started my morning routine with the kefir/colostrum/collagen and making the coffee. And I started to notice this weight in my chest.

As I sat in my “Jesus chair” (the chair I sit in the morning when I’m talking to God), the weight got heavier. I got curious about it and what I came to was that this sensation in my chest was because I was resisting apologizing for my behavior last night.

Did I get up and immediately go apologize?

Umm… no.

My hold up was this idea that my apology wouldn’t matter - that it would only stir things up again. And I hate conflict, so I avoid it.

I continued to resist and the weight continued to feel heavier and heavier. I played over and over in my head how I could displace the blame for the argument onto him rather than me. But every way I played it only led back to me apologizing.

So, I went in and said, “I’m sorry for what I did last night.”

It didn’t stir things up like I’d assumed it would. He was gracious and kind, wrapping me up in a big hug and letting me know my apology was accepted.

And ya know what - the weight on my chest was immediately lifted. Gone. Just like that.

When I think about it this weight isn’t an unfamiliar feeling. It actually visits a lot when I’m avoiding conflict whether I need to apologize or just engage in the conflict. It happened last week when we had a run review for one of our ambulance calls where I had questions about the care of a patient we’d passed on to a more advanced crew.

Acknowledging the connection feels like relief. And it gives me a starting point on what to do with the information my body is sending me in those moments.
