How do we break free from the hold our egos have on us?
Unfortunately, there isn’t a formula. No straightforward, plug in the variables and get a solution sort of fix. (Wouldn’t it be nice if we could just type out a command in Excel?)
No formula – but there is a solution.
And the solution lies in “feel.”
Get a “feel” for things
Feel is the combination of our own self-awareness and getting familiar with whoever or whatever it is we’re facing.
Over the last several weeks, I’ve mentioned the Enneagram (more than) a few times. In a nutshell, the Enneagram is a personality typing system made up of nine core types. The Enneagram differs from other personality typology systems, though. Because where the others determine your type based on your behaviors and traits, your Enneagram type is rooted in your motivations.
So, where other systems tell you what you do, the Enneagram shows you why you do it.
And the why is what matters.
I like to use the analogy of a car here.
Time to see the mechanic?
Say your car is running crappy, that much you know. At that point you have two choices. You can continue to operate it as is, or fix it. But, you can’t fix it unless you know why it’s running crappy, right?
It’s the same with us. We might know we have some poor behaviors, or we’re running crappy so to speak, and again we have two choices. We can continue to run as is, or we can make the necessary repairs to get us firing on all cylinders. But we can’t fix anything unless we know why we’re running crappy.
Lots of people do life just fine without the Enneagram. But, because this tool can help us illuminate why we are the way we are and what motivates all that we do, it can help us break free from our egos, stepping out of self-told lies and into God’s truths and the humans He designed us to be.
If the Enneagram isn’t for you, that’s okay. Self-awareness still is.
You can use reflection time to dig into the root of your behaviors. Asking yourself what drives you? What triggers you? What stresses you out? But really dig deep in your reflection.
Because self-awareness is the first step to breaking the hold our egos have on us.
