We Aren’t Meant to Do This Alone

In rural life, there’s a tendency to go it alone. To carry the weight of the farm, the family, and everything else without a second thought. It’s like we’ve been conditioned to believe that asking for help or admitting we’re struggling is somehow a sign of weakness.

But here’s the thing—we aren’t meant to do this alone.

Just like we rely on each other during the hardest days of calving, planting, or harvest, we’re also meant to rely on each other emotionally.

Physical isolation is a part of rural living, but it doesn’t have to be a part of our emotional lives. You deserve to feel heard, supported, and understood.

Take a moment to think: Are you giving yourself the same grace you give your land and your livestock? Are you allowing yourself the space to feel, to heal, and to reach out when things get heavy?

We’re not meant to bear it alone.

Grief, anger, the big and little traumas—we’re not meant to carry them solo. And yet, here we are trying to “toughen up” and “get back on that buckskin.”

But the truth is, that kind of weight breaks us, inside and out.

If you’re pulling yourself up by your bootstraps and still feeling like you’re sinking, episode 47 is for you. Reach out. Talk to your people. And if you don’t think you have anyone, I’m here.

Every behavior is a clue to an unmet need. Instead of focusing on correcting the behavior, what if we started meeting the need behind it?

The behavior just might disappear.

Let these wise words from @warwickschiller sink in: ‘When you meet the need instead of correcting the behavior, the behavior goes away.’

What behaviors in your life or in others might be pointing to something deeper?

Let’s get curious (not critical) and see what happens when we focus on meeting the need instead of fixing the behavior.

I’m tired of the lie we’ve been sold that emot

I’m tired of the lie we’ve been sold that emotions are weak.

Emotions are not weak, but not acknowledging them does make us weak.

Emotions are messengers. They’re meant to tell us something, then move quickly through our bodies. They’re not mean to be held onto, shoved down, or completely ignored. Our bodies can’t handle stored emotions and eventually we become weak or break physically.

I had right hip and low back pain for a long time, not long enough that I’d call it chronic and it wasn’t bad enough that it stopped me from doing things. But it was there and it did make things incredibly uncomfortable.

I don’t have that pain anymore, and ya know what finally got it gone? It wasn’t pain meds, stretching, chiropractic care (although that did help it feel better). What finally did the trick was acknowledging my emotions, validating them, and approaching them with compassionate curiosity.

The pain is gone, that is unless I start shoving down and trying to numb, which I still do on occasion because I’m human and not perfect. The point is - emotions are not weak. They can actually make us stronger more resilient humans when we listen to what they’re trying to tell us.

I’ve had a few of you OG followers from the Faith Family & Beef days reach out and saying that or something similar. And trust me, I get it. Ranch life is a big part of who I am, and I’ve always loved sharing our everyday ranch life.⁣

So, why the shift? Why have I moved from recipes and ranching to talking about relationships, self-awareness, and healing?⁣

The answer is simple but runs deep: I believe that good movement draws good movement—whether we’re working cattle or growing relationships with others. In 2016, I started to wonder if the principles we use in stockmanship could apply to relationships of the human variety, too.

Turns out, they do. And once I started diving into self-awareness, my own inner work, and exploring what it means to heal our attachment centers, it became clear that this is the work I’m meant to do.⁣

I still love ranching—it’s in my bones. But now, my focus has expanded to helping rural folks (like us) live fuller, more connected lives by fostering healthy relationships with ourselves and others. Because at the end of the day, the most important work we’ll ever do is relational, whether it’s with our cattle or with the people we love.⁣

So, whether you’ve been here since the beginning days of FFB or you’re new to my little corner of the interwebs, I’m glad you’re here!
