Three things I’ve learned in the last three week

Three things I’ve learned in the last three weeks.

1. Grief is weird, and most of us don’t know how to hold it. So, it makes us weird.

2. Fridays are tough for me. They’ll likely be tough for a (long) while.

3. There’s still light even in the darkest days. It shines through in the seemingly coincidental things that aren’t coincidence at all, the little unexpected God winks and subtle reminders that he’s still here.

It’s a weird place I’m in… On one hand my

It’s a weird place I’m in…

On one hand my heart is shattered into a million little pieces, and on the other I’m so happy for my Dad.

On Friday, he got to go Home to Jesus. He told me every time (or just about every very time) we talked that he was ready whenever the Lord was. He knew where he was headed. And I’m just so happy for him, but I wasn’t ready quite as ready for this day to come as he was.

I keep thinking I’m gunna eventually wake up and this will all have been a horrible dream, that he’ll walk around the corner with his shit eating grin (if you know Dad, you know the one), give me the biggest hug, and tell me a really great dad joke.

For several years now Dad felt called to the ministry. He and I talked for hours about his calling. It didn’t turn out the way either of us could have ever imagined, but as I look back on my own life and hear stories from others, I know now that his life was his ministry.

I am from wooden spoons, from ranch dressing and

I am from sand on the floor. (grey, plentiful, and gritty under foot)

I am from the grass the blazing star whose tops grow wispy in the wind.

I’m from Christmas morning and buttcrack noses, from Darlene and LaRoyce.

I’m from caring for cattle and riding horses, from sunrise services and candlelit Christmas.

I’m from Tilden and the Willers, fried chicken and steak.

From my young mom and my youngest-of-five boys dad who had me just ten months after they were married.

The old, repurposed cabinet in the living room holds the scrapbooks full of photos, newspaper clippings, and mementos carefully snapped, snipped, clipped and saved by my grandmother for her or for us I’m not sure, but I am grateful.

I am from the memories trapped within the crunchy pages, preserving our past for the future.

*this is part of my Where I’m From poem. We were assigned this mad-lib style exercise as part of @suzannestabile’s Enneagram Cohort (applications are open for 2024 cohort). I love how my poem turned out, but what I love even more is the reflection that came from writing it.

The enneagram ≠ salvation. Don’t treat it as such.

The enneagram is a tool, but NOT shield for bad behavior. Don’t use it as an excuse. NOR is it a weapon to be wielded against others.

The enneagram CAN expedite self-awareness. Use it to learn about yourself.

It DOES show us that there are different ways of viewing the world. Use it to learn about others.

It IS a tool for growth and compassion. DO use it to help you shed personality and grow into the human God created you to be. DO use it to show compassion and love your neighbors.

I did it for selfish reasons. I can’t not see

I did it for selfish reasons.

I can’t not see all sides of things.

I say “can’t not” because it’s not a voluntary thing. There is no black and white in my view. There are many shades of grey. Even when I know exactly where I stand on an issue, I can also see and empathize with those who view things differently than I.

I’m also a peacekeeper by nature. I hate conflict. It literally gives me a gut ache. Sometimes I let my fear of conflict hold me back. And I’m honestly surprised I don’t have an ulcer with all of the division and conflict in our world the past few years.

So, I did it for selfish reasons.

I became an Enneagram coach for selfish reasons. I felt that if we knew the why behind our behaviors and those of others, we’d have a better understanding of each other, less conflict, and I’d have fewer gut aches.
